“Helping Make JASA a Welcoming Place”

Sometimes friends do you a favor beyond measure...

That was the case for Edmund Wynter when his friend introduced the retiree to JASA’s Bay Eden Senior Center, where he immediately felt at home. It wasn’t long before he started to volunteer his time to help others feel welcome at the center. That was eight years ago and today the 76-year-old is a vital part of Bay Eden’s culture.

Edmund was born and raised in Jamaica, West Indies and migrated to the U.S. in 1968 where he worked for the phone company for 30 years. Married for 52 years, Edmund is proud to say that he has three children, six grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He volunteers at the senior center’s reception desk and serves breakfast to his fellow members. He also lends his expertise and experience to Bay Eden, by sitting on the center’s advisory board. His greatest pleasures, he says, are working in the community garden and serving other seniors.

One of the most important things about JASA for Edmund is that the staff encourage him to be part of organization’s programs. “They allow me to voice my opinion on the activities of the center.” And perhaps most important to him personally is that JASA recognizes the members’ different communities and backgrounds. “I love to remember and share my cultural traditions.”

People like Edmund are the heart of JASA’s community.
