Invisible to Visible: The Role of the Family Caregiver, A Call for Compassionate Support

Keynote Presenter: Dr. Tara Anglim, EdD, LCSW-R, ACHP-SW, CDTLF, Associate Executive Director of Culture & Experience, Caregivers Centers, Northwell Health-Peconic Bay Medical Center

This presentation grounded in powerful storytelling, examines the innovative, evidence-based research and interventions used to strengthen caregiver support. It emphasizes the importance of creative collaborations to enhance the well-being of both family caregivers and the individuals they care for. The keynote will explore the critical yet often overlooked role of family caregivers within the healthcare continuum, highlighting the need for a transformative shift towards a more family-centered approach.

Objectives

  • Describe the role of the family caregiver within the healthcare continuum – past, present, and future.
  • Identify gaps/barriers within the traditional continuum of healthcare that exist today, which place caregivers at increased risk of stress and burnout.
  • Examine the complexity of caregiver identity and how it impacts caregiver identification. 
  • Gain insight into the lived experiences of family caregivers, and how caregiver support positively impacts their ability to care for their loved ones.

11:00am - 12:30pm | Turning Pain into Purpose: A Caregiving Youth’s Journey into Social Work and Caregiver Advocacy

Presenter: Maria Miranda, LMSW, Case Management Social Worker, Presbyterian Senior Services

In this deeply personal and intimate conversation between keynote presenter Dr. Tara Anglim and Maria Miranda, they explore Maria’s story as a youth and adult caregiver. Discussing her experience and the challenges she faced in learning complex caregiving responsibilities and engaging with complex systems. Maria will share how her youth and her family’s caregiver tradition had an impact on her ability to identify as a caregiver and the emotional struggles she experienced as a result. Finally, Maria will share how she found meaning and purpose in caregiving which helped her to navigate through the grief and loss of her experience, transforming her pain into purpose.

Learning Objectives

  • Gain insight into the challenges that Caregiving Youth face and the impacts on their health and well-being as an adult
  • Understand current gaps in policies and programs to address Caregiving Youth and why change is needed.
  • Greater Awareness of the influence of culture and family tradition/norms on caregiver identification and how to better support caregivers.

Presenter: Tom Chiodo, Executive Producer, Caregiving and Special Projects at WETA PBS

With over 105.6 million unpaid family caregivers in the U.S. providing 34 billion hours of care annually—often at great personal and financial cost—America’s long-term care system is at a tipping point. This session will feature a screening of a powerful documentary that brings the caregiving crisis to life through personal stories and expert insights. The film examines the evolution of the care system, the social and economic challenges caregivers face, and the urgent need for systemic change. The project also includes a national engagement campaign to drive awareness and action. Join us for a discussion on the future of caregiving and the support needed for those who provide it.
