Community Guardian Program
JASA assumes the legal role of community guardian for adults who have been judged legally incapacitated by the courts and require a legal guardian. Through assessment, comprehensive service planning, regular visits, ongoing support, and regular reports to the courts, JASA ensures that the needs of these individuals are met. Guardianship responsibilities can encompass a wide range of duties. Based on court decision this can include assistance with aspects of daily living and advocacy with medical and social service providers.

The Internship
The position provides a unique opportunity to work directly with a senior attorney and to coordinate extensively with Program personnel. Interns will have the choice between earning a nominal salary or participating in the CGP Legal Internship Program and receiving pro bono credit to fulfill the requirement for admission to the New York State Bar. All interns will have the opportunity to work closely with the Legal Director of CGP and to participate in team meetings. There will be extensive training in the art of reviewing and analyzing court orders and other legal documents. For interns electing to receive pro bono credit as their compensation, there will be ample opportunity to attend court conferences, court hearings and settlement conferences.

RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE:

• Producing, editing and formatting court pleadings, discovery and other legal documents.
• Handling paper and electronic court filings.
• Collecting data and conducting research.
• Obtaining and reviewing court orders, commissions and other documents.
• Cite checking.
• Managing and coordinating databases, case management systems, case files, attorney correspondence and dockets.
• Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Commitment to public interest law.
• Currently enrolled in law school
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
• Exceptional organizational skills, including the ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize work, and meet deadlines under pressure.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, including the ability to compose, proof and edit correspondence and documents.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
• Demonstrated ability and willingness to master new technology.
• Strong research skills, including internet research.
