General Responsibilities:

Human Resources generalist responsible for performing administrative and professional-level tasks at JASA, NY City’s major not-for-profit organization providing support to the elderly. JASA is located in 50+ sites, with both union and non-union employees. Position requires significant interaction with full range of staff, as well as with candidates and outside vendors. Works closely with members of the Finance Department. Oversees Human Resources Assistant.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists in all phases of recruitment process, ensuring it is handled properly, and in a timely manner: prepares and updates job descriptions; prepares and distributes internal job posting notices; advertises positions on-line and via colleges and other venues; tracks and distributes resumes; screens finalist candidates; ensures background checks and driver license checks are conducted, as required; processes new hires
  • Oversees engagement and utilization of agency-provided temporary employees
  • Maintains HRIS software system: enters information regarding new hires, status changes, terminations, etc.; produces routine and ad hoc reports
  • Plans and helps to implement periodic New Hire Orientations: arranges speakers; prepares orientation group invite list; creates folders and Human Resources Policy and Procedures Manuals; reserves conference rooms; orders food; disseminates information to participants; etc. 
  • Provides information to managers and their staff regarding policies and procedures
  • Monitors driving records for JASA’s drivers
  • Prepares responses and maintains records for employment verification requests
  • Assists with exit interview process
  • Assists in designing and implementing new systems to perform tasks more productively
  • Oversees creation and maintenance of JASA employee files, assuring accuracy and compliance with regulatory issues
  • Codes and records invoices, and prepares check requests
  • Prepares and distributes employee correspondence, such as offer letters, change of status letters, termination letters, etc. 
  • Calculates, prepares and implements payroll changes
  • Maintains, tracks and processes Unemployment claims and inquiries
  • Represents JASA at Unemployment hearings
  • Attends career fairs throughout Metropolitan NY area
  • Opens, sorts, and distributes incoming mail
  • Assists in preparation, distribution and processing of benefits open enrollment materials
  • Orders office supplies
  • Assists in Human Resources Department’s metrics projects
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or related field 
  • One to three years’ experience in Human Resources
  • Computer literate, with  knowledge of current Microsoft Office Suite and Google applications, plus significant experience performing Internet-based research
  • Must be willing to learn and use program-specific software
  • Knowledge of HRIS system software, with ability to produce reports and enter/update employee data
  • Well-developed organizational and analytical skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Must be able to handle sensitive and confidential information
  • Facility in designing and implementing new systems
  • Ability to prioritize, often juggling several different projects simultaneously
  • Must work well in fast-paced team environment
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds unassisted
  • Will be required to work some evenings and weekends
