General Responsibilities:

The Development Associate is an integral part of the Development and Communications Department of JASA, a fast-paced, team-oriented department that is a vital part of a large agency. The position is the foundation of work within the department, and the candidate’s strong skills with data, research, and writing allow the department to appropriate solicit and steward gifts. The Development Associate will have the opportunity to engage in all institutional advancement, with agency departments including Administration, Programs, and the Executive Office; as well as other agency stakeholders.

Every year, JASA serves more than 43,000 older adults in over 50 locations across New York City and Long Island.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

• Implements departmental research and donor tracking activities, including but not limited to:
 developing lists of and researching prospective donors;
 preparing profiles on current and prospective donors; and
 tracking relationships with donors by maintaining both paper and electronic files and utilizing the Raiser’s Edge database.
• Prepares acknowledgement letters, invitations, and other written materials.
• Responds to queries from prospective and current donors.
• Develops and maintains strong knowledge of Raiser’s Edge utilization and best practices.
• Uses Raiser’s Edge database to document gifts, as well as track, analyze, and report on fundraising performance.
• Liaises with donors and prospective donors to solicit, cultivate, and steward as assigned.
• Assists in planning and producing events such fundraising galas, cultivation events, committee meetings, and/or others as needed.
• Assists in creation of direct mail pieces and coordinates mailings.
• Assists in development of promotional materials organization-wide.
• Prepares material for Development Committee and Board of Trustees meetings.
• Collaborates as appropriate with departmental and other agency staff to carry out duties.
• Performs other related tasks as requested or assigned.


• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
• Strong attention to detail
• Strong written communication skills
• Proficiency with Raiser’s Edge and google software (e.g. e-mail, calendars) strongly preferred
• Some prior familiarity with the operation of non-profit organizations
• Must be computer literate, including ability to learn and use program-specific software
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
• Discretion and ability to handle confidential information with sensitivity and discretion
• Knowledge of telecommunications, fax, copying, and other office equipment
• Ability to complete assignments efficiently, independently set priorities, meet deadlines, and work on several projects at once
• Must deal with staff and external parties in a professional and courteous manner
• Knowledge of and/or commitment to geriatric care, health, human services, and/or related fields strongly preferred.
