Essie Timmons
Volunteer, Dreiser Senior Center

Essie Timmons was attending JASA’s lunch program at Dreiser when the call went out for volunteers to help with the lunch service that day. “I found I really liked helping people who can’t easily wait in a line, or who have a wheelchair, or walker, which just makes it hard,” she said. “So, I help a bit, I give out condiments, fruit juice, carry food to people. I go wherever I’m needed, sometimes they don’t even ask, I’ll just do it. It really makes my day!”

One day, she saw the greeter was out and she “just started helping out.” Now she’s a welcomed regular in the role of volunteer hostess, greeting everyone as they come in, and helping them feel at home. She said she feels that welcoming spirit at the Dreiser Senior Center. “The staff are just loveable, happy people, they really care about the volunteers and the people who come there. They make every holiday a fun event!”

Essie loves the people she has met there and enjoys talking with people and listening to them. “So many people don’t have anyone at home and I try to listen and be encouraging. You don’t want anyone to leave here feeling bad.”

A former government worker who began her career as a clerk and over time worked her way up to a program analyst, she isn’t looking to sit on a couch any time soon. She participates in many of the programs herself that the Center offers, including the exercise class, the “Alert and Alive” discussions of current events, trivia, singing, bingo, movies…

“I joke and say, when I retired, I said I’m just going to clean my house now – how many years later and I still haven’t done it?”
