Helen Mayfield
Senior Volunteer and Senior Center Member

Helen was 62 when she moved to Co-op City’s Dreiser community and the JASA senior center there was a part of her new home from the start. “I was filling out the application to join the Center and I checked off the line that said I was interested in volunteering and here I am!”

Today, Helen volunteers at the senior lunches three days a week, which she views as another way to be out and about with her peers, people who share common interests and who are her own age, which she feels is important. She also takes classes for yoga, Zumba, and a course for diabetics. She is a member of a crocheting group, choir, and other activities. In addition to this busy schedule, Helen is also an active member of her church, volunteering for projects there as well.  “I like people!” she says simply.

This former NYC City Dept. of Social Services employee has always been one to keep busy. She has two sisters in North Carolina and a son who lives in Manhattan who are delighted with her involvement in JASA. “My family says ‘you’re never going to sit down!’ but I believe that God is good to me, I’m in fairly good health and I have always worked.” Helen shows no signs of slowing down and has this advice for others considering volunteering their services, “Do it – it will make a difference to somebody. You might not think it’s a big deal, but your smile, your being with them, can be a big deal to someone else. Volunteer, you’ll enjoy it – it’s an uplift in your life!”
