Learning one’s ABCs can be exciting at any age. The Jewish Association for Services for the Aged (JASA) believes that learning is a lifelong experience. Its Sundays at JASA continuing education program for adults age 55+ offers adventures in learning on a wide range of topics from the worlds of art, literature, and music to politics, ethics, and philosophy. “Sundays at JASA’s college-level courses, lectures, and seminars meant to stimulate the mind, body, and soul,” said Aileen Gitelson, CEO.
Sundays at JASA’s Fall Program includes sessions on everything from current events and American history, to elder law and communication online, from foundations of traditional Chinese medicine and Tai Chi, to crossword puzzle construction and music appreciation. The Ellie and Martin Lifton Institute of Judaic Studies will present two courses, including “Dear Abby: A Jewish Approach to Everyday Ethical Dilemmas,” and “Jewish Book Club,” which will focus on the stories of Sholem Aleichem, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Saul Bellow, Cynthia Ozick, and Nathan Englander.
Another highlight of the program is the Robert V. Tishman Lecture Series, which focuses on magic, dance, politics and philosophy. Among the speakers are: Jacques d’Amboise, one of America’s most celebrated classical dancers and principal with the New York City Ballet for more than three decades; Russ Baker, an award-winning investigative reporter who has written for the New Yorker, Vanity Fair, the Nation, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Village Voice and Esquire; and Joshua Halberstam, PhD, renowned philosopher, teacher, frequent guest on national television and radio, and author of A Seat at the Table.
Sundays at JASA will host a special Open House on September 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., where you will have an opportunity to meet the faculty, see the facility, enjoy some light refreshments, and register. All sessions and the Open House will be held at the John Jay College, 899 Tenth Avenue, between 58th and 59th Streets. The building is fully accessible.
Sundays at JASA runs from September 18 to December 18, with the exception of November 13 and 27.
